Micah Mason scored 28 points and
Derrick Colter fell two rebounds shy of a triple-double with 18 points, to go along with career high-tying efforts for rebounds (8) and assists (11) to lead Duquesne (16-15, 6-12) to a 78-70 win over Saint Joseph's (24-7, 13-5) in front of a sellout Senior Day crowd at SJU's Hagan Arena.
L.G. Gill added 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for the Dukes, who snapped an eight-game losing streak in posting the school's third win in 23 all-time games on Hawk Hill.
Isaiah Miles and Aaron Brown led Saint Joseph's with 21 and 20 points respectively.
Mason, who hit four of his five 3-pointers in the second half, saved his best for last, drilling a 25-footer over Saint Joseph's DeAndre' Bembry with 1:06 left to give the Dukes a 76-70 lead.
Mason and Darius Lewis hit free throws in the final 38 seconds to seal the win.
"I thought our two guards played like warriors tonight," said Duquesne head coach Jim Ferry.
DU, which took its first lead on a Gill 3-pointer with 11;10 left in the first half, never trailed from that point on. Saint Joe's tied it twice in the first half and once in the second, but could never regain the lead.
Mason hit 6-of-8, including 4-of-6 from the arc, in the second half.
Duquesne, which shot 50 percent, held the Hawks to 34.7 percent shooting, including 9-of-36 from the 3-point arc.
The Dukes, who led for 30 of the 40 minutes, outrebounded SJU 47-39.
"To come into this place, in this environment, against this team, to show unbelievable character and will - nobody quit," said Ferry. "It couldn't have come at a better time, going into the tournament."
Duquesne heads to Brooklyn for the Atlantic 10 Championship, March 9-13. The 11th-seeded Dukes will face No. 14 seed La Salle on Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. (ASN). The winner will play No. 6 seed Davidson at 9:00 p.m. on Thursday (NBCSN).
NOTES
This was Duquesne's third win in 23 trips to Saint Joe's .. DU has now won five of the past 10 meetings with the Hawks.
The victory clinched Duquesne's first winning regular season under Jim Ferry ... DU's last winning regular season was in 2011-12.
With his 3-pointer with 33 seconds left in the first half, Micah Mason broke the school record for three's in a season with his 100th ... the previous mark of 99 was set by Tom Pipkins in 1996-97 ... Mason finished 5-of-12 from the arc to bring his season total to 104.
With his career high-tying 11 assists, Derrick Colter joined Norm Nixon (1,805/577) as the only other player in school history with over 1,600 points and 500 assists ... Colter, who has 1,633 points and 510 assists, passed Bill Clark (1,628 from 2880-11) to move into the No. 7 spot on DU's all-time scoring list ... he ranks third in career assists.
L.G. Gill's 14 rebounds were two more than his previous career high of 12 set vs. St. Bonaventure on Jan. 16.
Duquesne's largest lead was +9 (54-45) the last of which came with 14:55 left ... Saint Joseph's largest lead was +6 (8-2) with 17:42 left in the first half ... there were seven ties and three lead changes before Jordan Robinson gave Duquesne the lead for good on a layup with 11:06 left ... Duquesne led for 30:01, Saint Joe's led for 5:37 ... the game was tied for 4:22.
