BERKELEY, Calif. - Chassidy Omogrosso scored a game-high 22 points to lead Duquesne (4-2) to a 65-50 victory over Western Carolina in the first day of the Cal Classic.
Amadea Szamosi recorded a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds. Julijana Vojinovic added 10 points.
Raziyah Farrington led Western Carolina (2-4) with 19 points.
FIRST QUARTER
All five starters registered field goals by the 6:33 mark and the Dukes doubled-up the Catamounts 14-7 coming out of the media timeout. WCU would get within a point after an 8-2 run, but a pair of Omogrosso free throws and a driving Vojinovic layup closed out the scoring with the Duquesne ahead 20-15.
SECOND QUARTER
Vojinovic's deep 3-from the right side forced a WCU timeout at 6:06 and gave the Dukes a 25-18 lead. At 1:58, Omogrosso's 3-pointer gave the Dukes their first double-digit lead of the game at 32-22. The Catamounts scored the last five points of the half, cutting Duquesne's lead to 32-27 at halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
Lass opened the quarter with a 3-pointer, but would be held scoreless until Omogrosso's layup at the 6-minute mark. This started a 10-0 run over the next 3:52, which increased the Duquesne lead to 45-30. Omogrosso ended the quarter with a layup that made the score 47-35.
FOURTH QUARTER
Duquesne held Western Carolina scoreless for the first 4:25 of the quarter. By then, the Dukes build a 23-point lead at 58-35 with 5:35 remaining after Conor Richardson's layup.
UP NEXT
The Dukes will face host California (5-0) in the championship game on Saturday evening. The Golden Bears defeated San Francisco in the first game of the evening 75-52. The game will start at 6:15 (EST) / 3:15 (PST).
