WASHINGTON, DC - Tyler Cavanaugh scored 13 of his career-high 30 points in the first half and Kevin Larsen added a career-best 25 to lead George Washington to a 91-64 win over Duquesne at Smith Center.
Derrick Colter had 10 points and Mar'Qywell Jackson scored all of his career-high 10 in the second half to lead the Dukes, who shot 36.4 percent.
GW, which shot 43.3 percent, got six 3-pointers from Cavanaugh and four from Alex Mitola in going 13-of-27 from the arc.
The loss was the fourth-straight for the Dukes, who dropped to 10-6 overall and 0-3 in Atlantic 10 play. The win was the tenth without a loss at home for GW, which moved to 13-3 overall and 2-1 in the A-10.
Neither team led by more than five early, before Darius Lewis produced the game's third tie with a pair free throws at the 9:00 mark. It was then that Cavanaugh took over, scoring 13 points - including three of his four first half 3-pointers - during a 16-2 run that gave the Colonials a 32-18 lead. The Dukes went 1-of-9 from the field during the GW run.
George Washington took its largest lead on a pair of Paul Jorgensen free throws with 2 seconds left that made it 41-27 at the half.
"They pounded us on the offensive glass," said Duquesne head coach Jim Ferry of the Colonials, who had 10 of their 17 offensive rebounds in the opening 20 minutes. "They got 52 percent of their misses back in the first half and we held them to 38 percent from the field. If we rebound it, it shouldn't have been that big of a lead."
Cavanaugh and Larsen, who combined for 43 of GW's first 53 points, both hit 3-pointers in the early moments of the second half to make it 49-30. Larsen's three was his first of the season.
"I think we let our offensive woes affect our defense in the second half," said Ferry. "That's the first time we've let that happen."
The Colonials hit six 3-pointers in the first seven minutes of the half to take a 70-40 lead.
Cavanaugh and Larsen left the game with five minutes left and GW up 85-55.
"I know we only lost one guy, but we've got to get it clicking," said Ferry referring to forward Jeremiah Jones who was lost for the season with a knee injury when the Dukes were 10-2. "We need to find a rhythm offensively and we need to find that third scorer. You are not going to win games - especially on the road - when you're shooting like we're shooting."
Duquesne hosts Saint Louis on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 7:00 p.m. (Atlantic 10 Digital Network).
