Moore, Nurkic Sign Professional Contracts Overseas

Jan. 26, 2016

Former Duquesne guards Raegan Moore and Belma Nurkic have both signed professional contracts earlier this month to play overseas. This marks nine Duquesne players that have signed professional contracts to play overseas that have been coached by Dan Burt.

Moore has signed with Huima, a team that plays the Suomen Mestaruussarja league (translated "Finnish Championship Series"). Huima's home court is in Äänekoski, Finland -- a city that is 193 miles north of Helsinki.

During her senior season, Moore reinvented herself as one of the Atlantic 10's top 3-point shooters. She set a school record and tied the A-10 record with nine 3-pointers at Kent State. In that game, she scored a career-high 35 points, which is the top mark for any A-10 player in 2014. She was part of the senior class that tied a program-best 88 victories.

She earned her bachelor's degree in psychology in 2012, earned her master's degree in child psychology in 2014.

"Raegan was doing advanced studies at the University of South Carolina when she got this opportunity to go to Finland. She will thrive in Finland because she is inquisitive by nature and she will have an appreciation for the culture and will do well basketball-wise based on her tremendous skillset," said Burt.

Nurkic has signed with KFUM Östersund Basket, a team that plays in the Swedish D-3 league. Östersund is a city that is 346 miles northwest of Stockholm.

One of only 12 players in Duquesne history to record over 100 3-pointers, Nurkic set a program-record her senior season when she converted 93.8 percent of her free throws. The Pittsburgh native, who was born in Bosnia, led the Class of 2015 with 87 victories.

Nurkic earned her bachelor's degree in sociology in 2014.

"Sometimes things don't work out that way you want them to, but if you keep faith and believe in yourself, things will eventually fall into place," said Nurkic. "That being said, never give up on your dreams, because hard work does pay off."

"Belma's opportunity to go to Sweden is a dream come true for her. She has worked exceptionally hard since graduation to earn this opportunity and I couldn't be happier for her. We'll all be rooting for her and wish her much success," said Burt.
