QUICK RECAP: The Duquesne volleyball team opened its home schedule in the first day of the Duquesne/Pitt Invitational.
Duquesne 3, Youngstown State 2(25-21, 22-25, 18-25, 25-21, 15-12) Box Score
The day opened with the Dukes winning their 14th straight home opener after a 3-2 victory over Youngstown State. Madelynn Burnham led all players with 16 kills, Mary Henry recorded a double-double of 45 assists and 10 digs, Abbie Trzeciak hit .375 with 12 kills, Nora Young hit .500 adding 11 kills and Sammy Kline had 21 digs.
In the second match of the day, YSU defeated Colgate 3-1.
Pitt 3, Duquesne 0 (25-23,25-21,25-21) Box Score
In the headliner, it was the annual City Match against the University of Pittsburgh. The Panthers' Kadi Kullerkann had a match-high 13 kills and Amanda Orchard had 11 kills and hit .556. For the Dukes, Trzeciak had 10 kills, Kline 11 digs, Henry a double-double of 28 assists and 10 digs.
With the 1st set tied at 23-23, Kullerkann recorded back-to-back kills to give Pitt the win. Duquesne held off a set point at 24-21 before a Dukes error gave the Panthers the 2nd set and a 2-0 match lead going into intermission. In the 3rd set, Duquesne was up 3-2 early on, but a 6-0 Pitt run put them up 8-3 and they held the lead for the next 19 points. A Molly Davet kill tied the set at 15-15. Th set would be tied three more times until Kullerkann's kill put Pitt up for good.
TOMORROW: The Dukes host Colgate at 1:00 p.m.
