AMHERST, MASS. - AMHERST, MASS. - Trey Davis scored 26 points, including 10-of-10 from the foul line, as Massachusetts ran its win streak to six with a hard-fought 82-74 win over Duquesne at Mullins Center.
Micah Mason scored 20 for the Dukes who were tied with the Minutemen with under three minutes to go.
Jordan Robinson, who finished with 10 points, hit a pair of free throws with 3:31 left to tie it at 66-66, before Davis answered with a floater in the lane and Donte Clark followed a DU turnover with his only field goal - a 3-pointer at the shot clock horn - that made it 71-66 with just under two minutes left.
UMass, which attempted 39 foul shots on the afternoon, went 11-of-12 from the line the rest of the way to seal the win.
Jeremiah Jones had his second-straight strong game for the Dukes with 11 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Dominique McKoy scored 10 on 5-of-6 shooting and Derrick Colter scored all of his 11 in the second half for DU.
Duquesne, which outshot UMass 43.3 percent to 42.9 percent, went just 5-of-21 from the 3-point arc. L.G. Gill, who entered the game shooting a team-best 42.9 percent from 3-point in A-10 play, missed all seven of his 3-point attempts.
UMass, which finished 9-of-22 from 3-point, went 25-of-39 from the foul line.
Duquesne, which saw both McKoy and Darius Lewis foul out, went 17-of-21 from the stripe.
DU held UMass without a field goal for the first 5:43 in jumping out to a 13-3 lead. The Minutemen caught fire behind a pair of Demetrius Dyson 3-pointers and took an 18-16 lead on a Davis three-point play at the 11:19 mark. There were two ties and two lead changes before the Minutemen took advantage of a DU cold streak to close the half with a 14-5 run. Jabari Hinds capped the run - during which the Dukes missed nine consecutive shots - with a deep 3-pointer at the horn that made it 39-30.
Duquesne remained within striking distance, cutting the lead to four on three occasions, before Davis hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Maxie Esho, who finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds, followed with a put back to make it a 57-47 game with just under 12 minutes left.
Mason then went to work, scoring seven-straight Duquesne points to make it 59-58 with 8:25 left.
Duquesne is at La Salle on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7:00 p.m. (American Sports Network/WPMY locally).
