@DuqWBB Announces 2016-17 Freshman Class

Nov. 19, 2015

PITTSBURGH - Duquesne head women's basketball coach Dan Burt announced Nina Aho, Halle Bovell and Anie-Pier Samson will comprise the incoming 2016-17 freshman class.

Aho is a 5-10 point guard from Budapest, Hungary.

This summer, Aho led Hungary to a goal medal and was first in the Shootout Final Standings at FIBA 3x3 U18 European Championships in Minsk, Belarus. Earlier in the summer, Aho was named to the Team of the Tournament, leading the Hungarians to a bronze medal at the 2015 FIBA 3x3 U18 World Championship in Debrecen, Hungary.

At the 2015 U18 European Championship Women -- Division A, Aho averaged 8.8 point per game, 4.9 rebounds per game and 3.0 assists per game.

The year before, Aho led Hungary to a perfect 7-0 record and the 2014 U18 European Championship Women -- Division B. In the championship game, the Hungarians defeated Estonia 58-52, who were playing with current Dukes forward Kadri-Ann Lass. Aho finished the event with 6.9 point per game, 2.6 rebounds per game and 3.4 assists per game.

Aho was also on the Hungarian national teams that won bronze medals at the U17 World Championship For Women in 2014 and at the U16 European Championship Women in 2013.

Aho is the fourth Hungarian to play for Duquesne joining current forwards Dukes Amadea Szamosi and Eniko Kuttor as well as Orsi Szecsi (2011-14).

"Nina is a vital part of the Hungarian National Team program and we are very excited to have her join our long tradition of the best Hungarian players playing at Duquesne University," said Burt. "Nina is an athletic point guard who can play anywhere on the perimeter. She has excellent experiences representing her country on the National Team at various tournaments and is widely considered the top 3x3 player in Europe. Nina attacks the basket with great quickness, is smooth in transition, and has legit 3pt range."

Bovell is a 5-11 guard from Hamilton, Ontario.

She is coming off a summer where was named the Canadian Nationals MVP in helping to lead Team Ontario to a National Championship. Bovell is also looking for her fourth consecutive Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) basketball championship title with the St Mary's Crusaders.

Bovell led St. Mary's to the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association title earlier this month, scoring 20 points in the championship game.

She was named Most Valuable Player at the 2015 Canada Basketball National Championships in Edmonton, Alberta for the Team Ontario U17 Girls squad. Bovell led Ontario to a prefect 3-0 record and a margin of victory of 25.3 points per game.

As a sophomore, Bovell was named to the 2014 JUEL of Ontario Prep All-Star team while leading her Hamilton Transway club team to the 2014 Provencal Championship.

Dan Olson of ESPNW has Bovell ranked #62 at the guard position with a Scouts Grade of 89.

"Halle is an athletic guard who has a very high ceiling," said Burt. "She is just coming into her own as a player and we feel like we got a major sleeper. Halle was named the MVP of the Canadian Provincial Games this July and had several power 5 conference offers. She has the ability to defend 1-4 while being a dangerous offensive threat, especially in transition. Halle was very well coached in high school and at the Provincial level, we believe she is going to have a seamless transition to big-time college basketball."

Samson is 6-2 guard from Saint-Bruno, Quebec, a city that is 20 miles northeast of Montréal.

She led Team Quebec to a national title for the U15 team and competed In U17 Quebec teams at the Canada Games. She won a national title with the St-Bruno Cougars club team, leading them to a 17-2 record and was named league and team MVP.

In the summer of 2014, Samson's Bluehounds team participated in the Big Apple Challenge in Newark, N.J. and the Nike Fall Finale in Washington, D.C. -- both sponsored by the U.S. Junior Nationals. Samson was named to the All-Star team in both games. The previous year, she was an All-Star at the USJN East Coast Challenge and a tournament Stand-Out at the Nike event.

Additionally, Samson was named Athlete of the Year, Best Woman Athlete, and won the Elite Sport Foundation Award at Trinity College.

Olsen has her ranked #18 at the forward position and the 76th best player overall in the 2016 Class with a Scouts Grade of 90 and is rated as the top 2016 Forward prospect in Canada by Crown Scout 2015 Recruiting Service.

"Anie-Pier is a legit 6-2 guard who has already shown tremendous work ethic in the classroom and on the court," said Burt. We are very excited that she accepted our scholarship offer last fall and believe what many scouting services say, she is a legitimate top 100 player in the 2016 class. Anie-Pier has very good shooting range to 22-feet, has improved her ability to get to the rim, and has college level strength right now. When she shows up on campus, she will have an immediate impact on our program."
