Nov. 10, 2015 On Saturday, November 7th the Duquesne Women's Freshman/Novice Team took to the Allegheny River in their annual hometown Car-DU-Pitt Scrimmage against the freshman/novice teams from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. This year the novice team from West Virginia University also took part in the scrimmage. All races were approximately 3000m downriver with a floating start.
The first event of the morning was the women's freshman/novice eight in which Duquesne had one entry. The line-up of coxswain Abigail Guenther, Lauren Murray, Kasie Sayers, Meghan Graham, Lauryn Garretson, Gabriella Spahr, Riley McGonigle, Molly Harkins, and Rachel Sann finished third in the three boat heat. WVU won the event with Pitt finishing second.
The second event of the morning saw the novice four A entry of Allison Schmitt, Margaret Cunningham, Meghan Graham, Erica Maney, and coxswain Mary Clay also finishing third in their three boat heat with WVU and Pitt finishing first and second. The novice four B of Laruen Murray, Kasie Sayers, Sarah Clair, Lindsey Thelk, and coxswain Abigail Guenther finished second in the second heat of fours behind the B entry from WVU and ahead of the lone entry from CMU.
"Overall I think it was a great day of racing," said Duquesne novice coach Jenn Langzettel. "The fall for our novices is about slowly immersing them in the sport without overwhelming them due to the rigors of freshman year academics. They still have a lot of growth to be had over the next few months before we head into our championship segment in the spring. This scrimmage helps to show them what spring racing will be like with head to head competition down a shorter course. We are grateful West Virginia traveled to us to be a part of this scrimmage and enjoy the tradition we have in place with Pitt and CMU to run this race at the conclusion on each fall season. Now we will look ahead to our winter training in preparation for a strong spring of racing."
