BUFFALO - Duquesne's football team opened the 2014 season by facing its first ever Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) foe and suffered a 38-28 loss to host Buffalo.
The Bulls took an early lead as quarterback Joe Licata connected with Matt Weiser on a 41-yard scoring strike. Patrick Clarke's point after made it 7-0 just 3:11 into the contest.
During Buffalo's next possession, a lightning strike at the 8:30 mark caused an automatic 30-minute delay in the game. Fourteen minutes later another bolt was visible, restarting the 30-minute clock for a total delay of 44 minutes.
On the first play after the break, UB passed into the end zone and was granted an automatic first down on the 17 yard line following a pass interference call against the Dukes. Two plays later Buffalo made it 14-0 on a n 11-yard run by Anthone Taylor with 7:30 remaining in the first quarter.
The next four possessions all ended with a punt, before the teams each committed turnovers. Duquesne's Dillon Buechel fumbled after being sacked by Brandon Crawford and Kendall Roberson recovered at the Duquesne 40.
Buffalo returned the favor as Nick Floyd intercepted a Licata pass at the Duquesne one-yard line. The Dukes would have to punt though, giving the Bulls the ball at the 37. Nine plays later, Taylor scored his second TD of the game, this time from five yards out to make it 21-0 with 5:24 ticking in the half.
The Dukes were forced to punt on their next drive, however the Bulls fumbled the punt and Wayne Capers recovered at the Buffalo 29. Five plays later, Buechel hooked up with Devin Rahming from four yards out for Duquesne's first score of the game with 1:58 remaining in the half. Buffalo moved the ball down to the Duquesne 27, but missed a 44-yard field goal attempt at the buzzer.
Duquesne received the second half kick-off and marched the ball down field, pulling within seven as Randy Morris ran the ball in from three yards out to make it 21-14 Buffalo at the 11:21 mark of the second half. The touchdown was set up by a 41-yard completion from Buechel to Chris King to the UB three yard line.
The Dukes forced UB to punt on its first posession of the second half, giving DU the ball at its own seven yard line. The Dukes ran the ball on the first two plays, setting up an 88-yard touchdown pass and run from Buechel to King to make the score 21-21.
The two teams exchanged punts before Buffalo took the lead back on a 24-yard field goal by Patrick Clarke with 1:46 remaining in the third quarter.
On DU's next possession, Buechel connected with Chavas Rawlins on catches of 18 and 10 yards before going deep to tight end Kevin Enight for 45 yards to the Buffalo two. After a loss of four yards on the next play, Buechel hit King for a six-yard acrobatic touchdown catch on the first play of the fourth quarter to give the Dukes their first lead of the game at 28-24.
Buffalo and Duquesne exchanged punts before UB went on a nine-play, 97-yard touchdown drive, culminating in a Ron Willoughby 24-yard touchdown catch to make it 31-28 Buffalo with 9:50 remaining.
The Dukes were forced to punt on their next possession, allowing the Bulls a chance to run some time off the clock. They went on a 16-play, 75 yard drive that ended with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Willoughby in the back of the end zone for a 38-28 UB advantage with 1:32 remaining.
Duquesne was able to move the ball to the Buffalo 13 in the waning seconds, but could get no closer. The Dukes will travel to Youngstown State next Saturday, Sept. 6 for a 4:00 pm kick-off.
