PITTSBURGH - Michael Myers scored 18 of his game-high 22 points in the second half, as Maryland Eastern Shore held off a Duquesne comeback attempt to defeat the Dukes 78-69 at Palumbo Center.

Micah Mason and Derrick Colter, who went a combined 7-of-15 from the 3-point arc, led Duquesne with 16 and 15 points respectively.

Devon Walker, who went 6-of-9 from 3-point, added 21 points for the Hawks who shot 57.1 percent on the afternoon.

UMES, which entered the game 2-1 against Atlantic 10 opponents, came out firing as Walker hit five 3-pointers in the first 11 minutes to stake the Hawks to a 34-22 lead. UMES, which shot 66.7 percent in the half, hit seven consecutive shots at one point in building a lead that reached 15 with just over three minutes left in the half.

The Dukes got 3-pointers from Mason and Colter and a layup from Jordan Stevens to cut it to 45-38 at the half.

Duquesne missed eight of its first nine shots of the second half as UMES built its lead back to 12.

"We should have been able to cut the lead - if not tie the game - but missing a bunch of layups and wide open three's really hurt us," said Duquesne head coach Jim Ferry of the start of the second half.

DU went on a 10-0 run to cut it to two on a Mason 3-pointer and jumper with 10:17 left.

That's when the 6-9, 245-pound Myers took over, scoring eight of the Hawks next 11 points to build the lead to 67-59.

"Their pieces really fit, because they have three exceptional 3-point shooters around a monster inside," said Ferry. "So you have to choose your poison. That's an older experienced team. That's why these guys have been able to win on the road."

The Dukes had the ball down five with just over three minutes left, but Mason lost control of the ball on a drive. Myers followed with a layup, and Duquesne turned it over again when a Colter-to-TySean Powell pass was mishandled.

Duquesne, down 74-67, forced a UMES turnover, but Mason misfired on a 3-point attempt from the top of the key with 1:27 left.

Myers, who also had a game-high 14 rebounds, was fouled and hit one to make it an eight-point game.

DU cut it to six on a pair of Colter free throws, but could get no closer as UMES made 3-of-4 free throws over the last 1:11 to seal the win.

Duquesne, which shot 44.4 percent, matched UMES' 28 field goals and nine 3-pointers. The difference was at the foul line where the Hawks went 13-of-19, while Duquesne was 4-of-7.

DU concludes the non-conference portion of the schedule at home against Texas-Pan American (5-7) on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 7:00 p.m.
