@DUQFB Falls at Wagner, 23-13

Box Score Nov. 15, 2014

Results A fourth quarter 19-play drive which took 10:43 off the clock and a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown less than a minute later lifted Wagner to a 23-13 victory over Duquesne Saturday at Hameline Field in Staten Island, N.Y. Wagner improves to 6-4 overall and 4-1 in Northeast Conference play while Duquesne falls to 5-6, 1-4.

Wagner opened the game's scoring late in the first quarter as Matthias McKinnon scored on a two-yard run to make it 7-0 Seahawks. McKinnon finished the first half with 67 yards on 10 rushes.

Late in the second quarter, DU quarterback Dillon Buechel, who missed two games with a rib injury, began to lead the Dukes upfield. He hit Devin Rahming with a 24-yard pass play to advance the ball to the Wagner 39 before connecting with Rahming again for 13 yards to take it to the WC 13 yard line, leading to a series of wild events.

Two plays later, Buechel again looked for Rahming, but the pass was intercepted in the end zone and returned 69 yards to the Duquesne 31. However, the Seahawks were called for defensive offsides and the Dukes maintained possession at the Wagner 10.

Following a Duquesne timeout, Buechel dropped to pass, couldn't find an open man and ran and slid forward for three yards before Wagner's Max Wassel hit Buechel in the helmet, was called for targeting and was ejected. A scuffle ensued in the endzone resulting in off-setting unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on each team.

Buechel eventually walked off the field under his own power and was replaced by Michael LoPresti. On the ensuing play, wide receiver Wayne Capers ran in his fourth touchdown of the season, a four-yarder and the Dukes tied it, 7-7 at the 2:11 mark to end the first half scoring.

Duquesne received the second half kick-off and was forced to punt after three plays. Wagner then went 37 yards on eight plays as Bryan Maley hit a 34-yard field goal to make it 10-7 Wagner with 9:03 left in the third quarter.

After exchanging three possessions, Wagner took over with 4:19 remaining in the third period and proceeded to go on a 19-play, 83-yard scoring drive which took 10:43 off the clock and was capped by an Otis Wright one-yard touchdown run, making it 17-7.

Less than a minute later, Wagner's defense gave the Seahawks a 16 point lead as Jarrett Dieudonne intercepted a LoPrresti pass and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown. The PAT was no good, making it 23-7 with 7:43 to go.

LoPresti then led the Dukes upfield on an eight-play drive which culminated in a one-yard touchdown run by Ryan Ho with 3:55 on the clock. LoPresti's two-point pass attempt failed and Duquesne's onside kick attempt failed as the Seahawks took over and finished out the game.

Wagner outgained the Dukes 309-185 and had 229 yards rushing. Marcus Hughes led the DU ground game with 60 yards on nine carries and Devin Rahming led with five catches for 60 yards. Nathan Stone was the top tackler with 14 stops (11 solo).

The Dukes will wrap up the 2014 season next Saturday, Nov. 22 as they host Robert Morris in a noon ESPN3 kick-off.
