Women's Basketball Signs Tyra Jones and Tanesha Sutton

Dec. 2, 2013

PITTSBURGH - Duquesne women's head basketball coach Dan Burt announced today the signings of Tyra Jones and Tanesha Sutton to National Letters of Intent.

Jones, a 6-0 wing from Detroit, is coming off a season leading Cass Tech to a 16-1 season and a berth in the Detroit Public School League's championship game. A prolific shot blocker, Jones participated in the Motor City Roundball Classic. While at Cass Tech, Jones received a number of awards including Detroit Free Press Top 100, USA Today All-Detroit Prep Girls Basketball Honorable Mention, 2012-13 Detroit Public School League All-City Girls' Basketball Honorable Mention and 2012-13 Michigan Citizen/Detroit PSL Coaches All-City Basketball Honorable Mention. She is ranked the #13 best player in the state of Michigan by LBInsider.

Jones will be playing her senior season at Cody High School.

Burt on Jones: "Tyra was someone who was not on our radar until this past July. I was immediately impressed with how hard she played every possession, and always with a smile on her face. Tyra, at 6-0, will be a multi-position player for us. She will start her career at the 4 spot, but we anticipate her playing the 2,3 positions in her career. Tyra is strong, has a impressive face-up jumper to 17 feet and plays with reckless abandon. The coaching staff and I are very excited that Tyra chose Duquesne."

Sutton is a 5-10 guard from Philadelphia who attends Ss. John Neumann and Goretti High School. As a junior, she scored 20 points in the PIAA District 12 Championship game, leading Neumann-Goretti to its first-ever district crown. She recorded a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds as she led the Saints to a 76-37 victory in the first round of the 2013 PIAA Championship. This past summer, Sutton participated in The Girls All City Classic.

Burt on Sutton: "Tanesha is a legitimate 5-10 guard who can play all three guards spots and is strong enough to guard some 4's at the Division I level. She has great explosiveness on the offensive end that allows her to get to the rim with ease. She is also a capable ball handler who will play some point guard in her career at Duquesne. Tanesha is a high-character player who has great work ethic. Playing at Neuman Goretti under head coach Letty Santarelli has allowed Tanesha to play in a nationally ranked high school program that will make her transition to Division I basketball much easier. We believe that we have a steal in Tanesha."
