PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne volleyball team opened its 2012 Atlantic 10 Conference season with a 3-1 win over VCU on Friday night. The scores of the sets were 26-24, 19-25, 25-19, 25-14. The Dukes improve to 12-5, 1-0 A-10 while the Rams fall to 12-2, 0-1 A-10.
Allison Foschia recorded a double-double of 12 kills and 13 digs. Arielle Love led all players with 15 kills while hitting .481. Patti Abshire had a match-best 24 digs and Mary Henry recorded a match-high 42 assists. Sara Scheirman had eight kills, giving her 1,149for her career which moved within one kill of Amanda Haeg for fifth place on the Dukes' all-time kill list.
The Dukes' defense finished with 10 total blocks (second most this season) and 70 digs (third most this season) and held VCU's Martina Samadan - the A-10's leading hitter - to a .000 hitting percentage.
Duquesne, winners of 4-of-5, snapped VCU's eight-match winning streak.
Next up for the Dukes will be Charlotte on Sunday afternoon. Match time is 1:00 p.m.
