AKRON, Ohio - Paige Maroney's goal in the 10th minute lifted the Duquesne women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Akron met in an exhibition match at FirstEnergy Stadium - Cub Cadet Field on Sunday.
Maroney scored off a loose ball from 18 yards out, sending the ball past UA keeper Alex Luevano-Harden from the right side.
Dukes' keepers Ashley Szalwinski and Devon Tabata shared the duties in net, playing a half each and combining for four saves.
DU had another scoring chance late in the second half - a Duquesne corner kick in the 87th minute resulted in a quick low shot by Maroney being cleared off the goal line by Akron defender Holly Ohradzansky.
For the match, Duquesne outshot Akron 14-8 led by Maroney's six and Rachel Baker's three.
First-year head coach Al Alvine makes his Duquesne debut when the regular season kicks off on Aug. 17th at Saint Francis, Pa.
