The Duquesne Rowing team arrived in Florida on Sunday, February 27th to find beautiful water and 80 degree weather. The women went right to work training hard throughout the week with double practices each day. At the end of the week the Dukes participated in the Metro Cup Regatta hosted by Rollins College on Lake Maitland. Other participating college crews were Rollins College, University of Central Florida (UCF), and Villanova University who had also spent the week on Lake Maitland training.
On Saturday, March 5th the first event of the morning was the women's 2nd varsity/novice four event. The Duquesne novice women (cox: Olivia Twomey, stroke: Hannah Olinger, Regina Dutz, Stephanie King, and bow: Megan Pamarter) raced well finishing just 6.4 seconds behind the first place 2nd varsity four from Villanova with a time of 8:38.4. Villanova's winning time was 8:32.0. UCF finished 3rd in 8:43.9 and Rollins finished 4th with a time of 8:58.0.
As the winds began to pick up the varsity four (cox: Michelle Karkos, stroke: Emma Foley, Colleen Cannan, Rachael Ross, bow: Meghan McNichol) finished 4th in their event which was won by Villanova.
The Duquesne 2nd novice four (cox: Olivia Twomey, stroke: Stephanie King, Regina Dutz, Kamryn Thorpe, bow: Megan Parmarter) finished second in their event with a time of 10:16.9 behind the first novice four from Villanova who posted a winning time of 9:51.3.
The last events of the day were the eights races. The 2nd varsity eight (cox: Mary Ketchner, stroke: Aly Enslen, Emma Keller, Katie Arias, Laura Dunlap, Hilary Lovett, Liz Rhodes, Sam Newhart, bow: Teresa Guzik) finished first in their event posting a time of 8:00.4 ahead of crews from Rollins College (8:36.3) and UCF (8:53.2). Villanova unfortunately scratched their boat from this event prior to the race.
The varsity eight was the last event of the day and the Duquesne women again had a very strong showing finishing first with a time of 7:41.0. This was 10 seconds ahead of the second place Villanova crew (7:51.7). UCF finished third with a time of 7:59.0 and Rollins College was fourth with 8:13.3.
Overall it was a great way for the Duquesne women to start the spring season. While the Pittsburgh weather is making it tough to get on the water, the team will train hard over the next two weeks and is eager to face Dayton and Marietta at a scrimmage on Saturday, March 19th at Marietta.
