PITTSBURGH - Coming off a year hiatus of the volleyball City Game, Duquesne and Pitt met at the Fitzgerald Fieldhouse on Wednesday night. Pitt, behind 22 kills from Keisha Leggs and 19 from Jessica Wynn, defeated the Panthers 3-1 with set scores of 25-18, 25-27, 25-22, 25-17.
Sara Scheirman recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 13 kills and 10 digs. Taylor Jones also had a double-double - her 17th this season - of 42 assists and 15 digs. Liz Homan and Arielle Love each had 11 kills and hit .360. Allison Foschia had a team-best 16 digs for the Dukes who fall to 17-11 overall heading into the final weekend of the season.
With the first set tied at 6-6, Pitt went on a 13-4 run to take a 19-10 lead. The closest DU would get would be six points at 24-18, but a Leggs kill gave the Panthers the win 25-18.
The second set was played tight, with 11 ties and four lead changes. Trailing 24-23, the Dukes held off set point on a Homan kill. With the score deadlocked at 25-25, Pitt had back-to-back errors to give the Dukes the set 27-25 and tie the match at 1-1.
The Dukes took a 15-11 lead in the third set, but the Panthers would score six of the next eight points to tie the match at 17-17. A Wynn kill gave Pitt the lead with started an 8-5 run which ended the set at 25-22.
Love's kill gave Duquesne a 13-9 lead in the fourth set before Pitt came back with a 6-2 run to go up 15-14. The Dukes would only score three more points the rest of the way as Alexa Campbell's ace gave the Panthers a 25-17 set win and a 3-1 match victory.
The Dukes close out the regular season against Temple on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and La Salle on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
