Junior Adam Clement's goal with six seconds remaining in regulation salvaged a 1-1 tie with visiting St. Bonaventure Friday evening on Rooney Field in Duquesne's Atlantic 10 season opener.
With 30 seconds remaining in regulation, Clement stole a throw in pass near the SBU goal. The Dukes advanced it beyond midfield and the Bonnies kicked it out of bounds. Simon Gomez threw the ball in to Joshua Patterson who returned the ball to Gomez on the right sideline. Gomez took the ball across the field and centered it where it deflected to Clement who buried it into the middle of the net from 25 yards out.
The Dukes seemed to have the better of SBU in the first half with a 6-4 advantage in shots and a 3-0 lead in corner kicks, however the Bonnies scored in the 42nd minute to take a 1-0 lead into the half.
That Bonnie lead held through most of the second stanza despite a couple DU scoring opportunities until sophomore Simon Gomez gained control of the ball near midfield with time waning, made a couple moves and lofted the ball toward the goal where Clement headed it in.
Clement has made the most of his career-high three goals this season as his prior two were game-winners and this one was a game-tying score.
"Adam's been fantastic this year, he's been a great leader, he's our team captain," said head coach Jake Ouimet. "He has stepped up three times and either won a game or tied a game for us. It was just a fantastic goal, a great effort."
The Red and Blue outshot the Brown and White 19-12 for the game, including a game-high six shots by junior Joshua Patterson, who missed on a penalty-kick shot very early in the contest.
The Dukes will take the rest of the weekend off in preparation for their toughest road trip of the season as they head to Saint Louis Friday before traveling to Charlotte on Sunday.
