Duquesne's men's soccer team battled #15 Michigan State to the very end, but came up short in a 2-1 loss to the visiting Spartans Wednesday evening on Rooney Field.
MSU lit the scoreboard first with a goal in the 23rd minute and a 1-0 lead. The Dukes answered quickly though as senior Stefan Lundberg took a pretty pass from freshman Sean Gardner in the 35th minute and beat the keeper to take a 1-1 score into halftime.
It appeared that the Dukes would take the lead in the 56th minute as senior Gavin Stabbe fired a shot from 30 yards out off an indirect kick, but it was just inches high, smashing off the cross bar. The Spartans responded however, finding the net on a header off a direct kick one minute later for the eventual game-winner.
The Dukes had a number of opportunities to tie the contest down the stretch, including a shot by senior Tyler Tompkins with 28:43 remaining that went just wide right of the net and freshman Simon Gomez's shot with 1:30 left that went over the goal.
The Red and Blue return to action on Saturday, Sept. 25 as they host Belmont at 7:00 p.m on Rooney Field.
