WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Duquesne volleyball team played a pair of matches on Friday in the first day of the Active Ankle Challenge on the campus of Purdue University.
The event got off to a slow start as the host Boilermakers needed only 70 minutes to chalk up a 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-22) win. Nicole Wright led DU with nine kills. Sarah Svorinic had a match-best 23 assists and Allison Foschia recorded 10 digs.
The second match day pitted Duquesne against Belmont. This match was quite the opposite of the first one - over two hours - as the Dukes came from two sets down to claim a 3-2 (18-25, 18-25, 33-31, 25-17, 17-15) victory.
Foschia (13 kills, 12 digs) and Sara Scheirman (17 kills, 14 digs) each recorded double-doubles for DU. A pair of Dukes set a career-highs - Svorinic 53 with assists and Liz Homan with 18 kills.
After the Dukes (7-3) dropped the first two sets, they faced three match points in the third set, but held on each time. With the scored deadlocked at 31-31, back-to-back kills by Scheirman and Foschia gave the Dukes a 33-31 set win.
DU jumped out to an early 12-5 lead in the fourth set and never looked back. The Bruins would only record back-to-back point two times the rest of the set. BU's Jen Myer's service error at 24-17 gave the Dukes the win and forced a deciding set.
Down 14-9 in the fifth set, Duquesne held off four match points and took a 15-14 lead behind three straight Scheirman kills. Belmont's Allison McCoy's kill would even the score at 15-15 before kills by Homan and Scheirman ended the match with the Dukes taking the decisive set 17-15 completing one of the greatest comebacks in program history.
The Dukes hit the floor tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. when they take on Connecticut.
