Duquesne's baseball team utilized solid pitching from Paul Bugajski and timely hitting from the offense to win its fifth straight contest, downing visiting Temple, 6-3 Saturday afternoon at Duquesne Field.
With the victory, 17-year head coach Mike Wilson moved into a tie as the University's all-time winningest coach with 344 career wins.
The Dukes grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third as Johnny Elms singled and scored three batters later on a Rick Devereaux fielders choice.
The 1-0 advantage held until the top of the seventh when Temple led off the inning with a solo homer. The Red and Blue responded though with four runs in the bottom of the seventh as Devereaux doubled in a pair of runs and Mark Tracy singled home a base runner for a 5-1 lead.
Both teams scored a run in the eighth and Temple tallied one more in the top of the ninth, but it was not enough for the Owls.
Bugajski pitched a season-high 7 1/3 innings, allowing just six hits and two runs while striking out three to pick up the win. Andrew Heck tossed the final 1 2/3 innings, giving up just one unearned run.
Devereaux was 2-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Matt Carson was 3-5 with a run scored, Anthony DeFabio was 2-4, Johnny Elms was 2-4 with a run and Jackson Boyd launched his first collegiate home run.
Game three of the series will be played Sunday at 1:00, a time change from the initial noon start. At 12:45 Coach Mike Wilson will honor seniors Paul Bugajski, Johnny Elms, Chris Happ and Mark Tracy.
