Duquesne University sophomore baseball player Anthony DeFabio (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) was recently named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 2 Baseball Team as voted on by the district's sports information directors. He will now have his name placed on the national ballot.
DeFabio, who has made 23 starts at third base, 15 at catcher and two at designated hitter, is third on the team in batting average at .318 (42-132). He leads the team in walks with 28, hit by pitch with 11 and on base percentage at .463. DeFabio boasted a team-high and near school-record 16-game hitting streak from March 30 - April 23, hitting .481 during the span. He is also among the team leaders in runs scored, RBI, doubles home runs and stolen bases.
To be eligible for this award, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 on a scale of 4.00. He/she must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at the institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution. Sports information directors nominate eligible athletes from their schools who are named to district teams prior to being voted upon on the national level. CoSIDA has been selecting Academic All-America teams since 1952.
CoSIDA's District II covers Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
