Red and Blue Exterminate Spiders in Ninth Inning, 6-5

With a tie score and runners at the corners and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Anthony DeFabio singled to left field, scoring Andrew Heck to give the Dukes a 6-5 win over Richmond Sunday afternoon at Duquesne Field.

The Dukes grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but saw in erased by a five-run Richmond third inning. DU narroed the deficit to 5-4 with a pair of runs in the fifth, then tied the score in the eighth before the dramatic finish.

Johnny Elms collected his first win of the season, pitching a hitless and scoreless final three innings, striking out three. Brad Duffy, the starter, got a no decision, pitching six innings, while allowing four earned runs and striking out five. Even though Duffy has a 0-0 record on the season, the Dukes are 4-0 in games in which he was the starting pitcher.

Heck capped off a stellar weekend, going 2-4 with two runs scored. Mark Tracy was 2-5 with a run and an RBI. Anthony DeFabio was 1-3 with two runs knocked in and Rick Devereaux was 1-4 with two runs scored.

The Dukes return to action on Tuesday, May 11 as they host Akron at 3:00 pm at Duquesne Field.
