Baseball Goes 1-2 at Ohio State Invitational

Duquesne's baseball team wrapped up its spring break trip by going 1-2 at the Buckeye Invitational in Port Charlotte, Fla.

On Friday, the Dukes suffered a heart-breaking loss to 16th-ranked Ohio State, 9-8. The Dukes jumped to a 3-0 lead after five and a half innings before OSU tied it in the bottom of the sixth. A two-run top of the seventh gave DU a 5-3 advantage before the Buckeyes scored one in the seventh and three in the eighth for a 7-5 lead ... setting up a dramatic ninth inning which saw the Dukes score three runs to take an 8-7 lead. The Red and Blue were able to get two outs on the Buckeyes, but an infield error and a single scored a run each for the final margin. Andrew Heck was 3-5 with two runs scored, Chris Kimmeth was 2-4 with two RBI and Mark Tracy hit is team-leading fourth home runs of the season.

On Saturday, the Dukes grabbed their second win of the season with a 12-10 triumph over Fairleigh Dickinson. Heck and Tracy both hit home runs in the game while Mike Ganley knocked in four runs. Kimmeth added three RBI and Rick Devereaux knocked in two, while scoring four times. Joe Lombardo secured his first collegiate victory, tossing the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing no earned runs.

On Sunday, the Dukes fell to Atlantic 10 foe Saint Louis, 7-2. Ganley went 2-4 with a two-run single in the ninth. Heck, Kimmeth and Chris Happ also had hits.

The Dukes are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, March 9 as they travel to West Virginia for a 3:00 contest.
