PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne women's soccer team dropped their 2009 season opener to Saint Francis, Pa. 2-1 Friday night at Rooney Field.
SFU has the first scoring chance of the match just three minutes in when Dukes' keeper Gabby Morrin stopped a Tesa McKibben shot at point blank range.
The Red Flash got on the board first in the 32nd minute when Rachel Siebert scored on a rebound from McKibben.
Samantha Kaiser tied the contest at 1-1 when she headed a Laura Tlumack pass into the goal in the 50th minute.
Less than three minutes later, McKibben scored the game-winner when she slipped past Morrin at the 20-yard line for an open goal.
The Dukes had a chance to tie the score in the 74th minute when Morgan Herbert's shot rang off the crossbar. The rebound came to Shaina Geisler, but her shot was stopped by SFU keeper Jessica Boyer.
"We battled hard, especially in the second half," said head coach Tim Zundel. "Although we are disappointed with the result, we never gave up. We're going to get back to work and be ready for next weekend."
DU has a week off before the Duquesne Classic. The Dukes play Marshall on Aug. 28 at 7:00 p.m. and cross-town rival Robert Morris on Aug. 30 at 3:00 p.m.
