Duquesne's baseball team lost the opening game of a three-game series with Dayton Saturday afternoon, falling to the Flyers, 5-4. Ryan Juran pitched eight solid innings while Rick Devereaux knocked in two runs for the Dukes.
Trailing 1-0 in the third, Devereaux had a two-run single to give the Dukes its first lead. The Flyers responded by scoring twice in the top of the fourth, but DU answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the frame as the Red and Blue scored twice on a two-out throwing error. However, the Flyers posted single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to capture the win.
Anthony Manley, Chris Happ and Brian Bernardo each had two hits. Juran allowed just three earned runs in his eight innings of work, while striking out three.
Game two of the series will be played Sunday at 1:00 pm. Senior Day festivities will preceed the game.
