Dukes Bounce Back with 13-6 Triumph Over GW

April 25, 2009

Box Score

Duquesne's baseball team scored at least two runs in six of its innings to capture a 13-6 victory over visting George Washington Saturday afternoon at Duquesne Field. Freshman Derrik Zeroski had his best day as a Duke, going 4-4 with four runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base. The Dukes improved to 10-31 overall and 5-11 in Atlantic 10 play while George Washington fell to 18-24, 7-9.

The Colonials took an early lead scoring two runs in the first, but the Red and Blue responded with a pair of their own runs to tie the score. A three run second inning gave DU a lead it would never relinquish as they added two in the third and two more in the fourth for good measure.

Gary Pierpont pitched the intial seven innings, striking out four while only walking one to pick up his team-best third win of the year. Fellow senior Danny Brown closed the door, allowing just one Colonial to reach base in the final two innings.

Other contributors were Andrew Heck who went 3-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, Mike Carroll who was 2-4 with two RBI, Bill Torre with two hits, Rick Devereaux with two RBI and Derek Lefever who hit his first collegiate home run.

Game three of the series will be played Sunday at noon.
