Women's Track and Field Opens Season at VMI Invitational

The Duquesne women's track and field team began their spring season this weekend. The runners and jumpers competed in the VMI Invitational while the throwers participated in the 2009 Western Pennsylvania Championships held in California, Pa.

Samantha Howard dominated the 1500m taking first place by over 11 seconds with a time of 4:39.35. Sara Cimino placed third for DU crossing in 4:49.63.

The Dukes relays teams did exceptionally well as the 4x100 team of Melissa Miller, Meghan Wendelken, Kristin Wenthen and Brooke Taylor held off Washington & Lee's team to win the race by 0.14 finishing with a time of 50.36. In the 4x400, Miller, Wenthen, Wendelken and Charlene Garth finished first with a time of 4:01.27, over nine seconds better than second place Carnegie Mellon. The 4x800 squad of Cimino, Megan Ecker, Kathleen Parker and Meghan VanHouten took first crossing in 9:40.81.

Miller also took first place in the 100m (12.41) and 200m (25.31).

Parker missed first place in the 400m by one second crossing in 59.70.

Amanda Collins' time of 1:06.36 in the 400m hurdles was good for a second place finish.

In the jumps, Sierra Larsuel and Mallory Mitchell took first and second with long jumps of 17-11 and 17.6.75 respectively. Larsuel also took second in the triple jump with a distance of 37.8.75. Sarah Cappo finished second in the high jump with a distance of 5-0.25. Daniela Siciliano (10-10) took first in the pole vault followed by Katelyn Cass (10-4) who finished third.

At the 2009 Pennsylvania Championships, Arin Whitman took first place in the discus with a throw of 127-5 and second in the hammer with a distance of 147-2. Sydney Schwab had a second place finish in the javelin with a throw of 134-3. Overall the Dukes finished seventh. Korrey Willis' distance of 42-6 in the shot put was good for second place.

Up next, the Dukes travel to Durham, N.C. for the Duke Invitational April 3-4.
