Duquesne's baseball team won its hope opener on Duquesne Field Tuesday afternoon, downing Cleveland State, 5-2. Freshman Rick Devereaux had two doubles and knocked in two runs while fellow frosh Jim Devine and Brad Duffy each tossed three scoreless innings.
CSU opened the scoring with single runs in the second and third innings off freshman starter Michael Pelekanos for a 2-0 lead. Pelekanos pitched his scheduled three innings, allowing just one unearned run while walking none and striking out three.
The Dukes evened the score in the bottom of the fifth as senior Bill Torre walked and fellow senior Anthony Manley doubled him to third. Devereaux followed with his first double, driving in two runs.
The contest remained tied until the bottom of the eighth when Devereaux doubled to open the inning. Junior Mark Tracy walked, then senior Derek Fallecker knocked in senior Mike Carroll, who pinch-ran for Devereaux. After a Vikings pitching change, freshman Chris Kimmeth singled in Tracy and Fallecker scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
Both teams tallied seven hits, but the story of the game was the trio of freshmen pitchers who combined for eight strikeouts and walked none.
