After managing just one hit in their season opener on Saturday, the Duquesne bats woke up a bit on Sunday as the Dukes fell to South Carolina, 8-4. The Red and Blue had six hits, inlcluding two by senior Anthony Manley who also added two RBI.
The Dukes trailed 4-0 after four innings before scoring their first runs of the season in the top of the fifth as freshman Rick Devereaux and seniors Mike Carroll and Derek Fallecker each had hits and Fallecker and sophomore Andrew Heck each added RBI to cut the deficit in half.
After giving up a run in the sixth, DU responsed with two more in the seventh to move to within 5-4 of the Gamecocks as Manley singled in Fallecker and sophomore Chris Happ. USC put up three runs in the bottom of the seventh though for the final score.
Senior Bill Torre was 1-3 with two walks, senior Brian Bernardo reached twice by walk and Happ walked three times.
Game three of the series is slated for Monday at noon.
