Feb. 11, 2009

Box Score

RICHMOND, VA. - David Gonzalvez scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half and Kevin Anderson scored eight of his 14 in the final 2:22 to give Richmond a 71-67 come-from-behind win over Duquesne at Robins Center.

The win was the 12th in a row for the Spiders over the Dukes.

Aaron Jackson and Damian Saunders scored 14 points each in a losing effort. The win evened Richmond's record at 12-12 (4-5 in the Atlantic 10). Duquesne dropped to 15-8 and 6-4 with the loss.

Duquesne, which led by 15 with just under four minutes left in the first half and by 10 in the early moments of the second, held the lead until Richmond's Justin Harper converted a three-point play with 10:25 left to put the Spiders up one. From that point on there were seven ties and two more lead changes as the largest lead for either team was a brief five-point margin by Richmond with 5:29 to go.

Duquesne pulled within one at 61-60 on a Jackson layup with 2:53 left before Anderson went to work. Jason Duty answered an Anderson jumper with a 3-pointer to tie it at 63-63. Jackson followed another Anderson jumper with a bucket to knot the score once again. Anderson scored once more before Melquan Bolding's 3-point attempt from the deep corner was blocked by Francis-Cedric Martel with 25 seconds left. Anderson then hit a pair of free throws to put the Spiders up four. Bolding hit a layup with three seconds left before Gonzalvez scored on a breakaway at the buzzer for the final margin.

"The last 2:30 or so, Anderson did a great job of getting into the lane and making some tough shots," said Duquesne coach Ron Everhart. "We had our chances to come up with a big stop, but just didn't do it."

The Dukes jumped out to a 35-20 lead, only to see Richmond cut it to eight at the half with a 7-0 run.

Gonzalvez hit three 3-pointers in the first 4:07 of the second half to help Richmond erase an early 10-point deficit.

Ryan Butler hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Richmond a 57-54 lead with 7:54 left. The game went back and forth, before Anderson scored the third of his three jumpers in the lane.

"We went to sleep on Gonzalvez and let Butler step out and hit a couple of shots," said Everhart. "Anderson controlled the game late. We had no answer for him."

Richmond, which went 5-of-8 from the 3-point arc in the second half, shot 53.2 percent for the game. Duquesne, which went 6-of-22 from 3-point, including 2-of-10 in the second half, shot 41.8 percent.

Both teams finished with 14 turnovers, with nine of Duquesne's coming in the second half including three in the final four minutes.

Duquesne returns home to face Temple in CBS College Sports nationally televised game on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
