Duquesne's men's soccer team wrapped up the 2009 season with a 3-1 victory over visiting St. Bonaventure, Friday evening at Rooney Field. Senior Matthew Groves finished his collegiate career with two goals while fellow senior Kevin Foglesong recorded his first collegiate point.
The teams played 40 minutes of scoreless soccer before Foglesong found an open Groves in the middle of the field as the Dukes took a 1-0 advantage. Just a minute and 40 seconds later, sophomore Tyler Tompkins found the net for a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Atlantic 10's leading scorer, Sam Maheu of SBU tallied his 11th goal of the year in the 61st minute to give the Bonnies some hope of a comeback, but Groves put an end to those hopes in the 85th minute with his seventh career goal off a junior Stefan Lundberg assist for the final score.
Junior keeper Chris Torres made a season-high eight saves to record his fourth win of the season.
Senior Alex Trujillo also played his final game in a Duquesne uniform as the athletic department honored the three seniors prior to the contest.
The Dukes finished the year at 9-7-2 with a 4-4-1 conference record and a 6-2-2 record on Rooney Field.
