Duquesne's soccer team captured its first home victory of the season as it improved to 2-0-3, downing visiting Marshall, 4-1 in Friday's first round of the Duquesne Invitational. Ben Horner tallied a goal and two assists in the win.
The Dukes put an end to a 363-minute scoring drought in the 12th minute as Alex Trujillo headed in a lob from Horner as DU captured the early lead. Horner was involved in the action again in the 24th minute as he found the back of the net off a Greg Annan assist to give the Red and Blue a 2-0 halftime advantage.
In the 54th minute, Stefan Lundberg tallied his second goal of the season off assists from Horner and Bryan Matthews to put DU up 3-0. Marshall lit the scoreboard with its lone goal in the 68th minute, but the Dukes responded in the 80th minute as Derek Patrizio tallied his first collegiate goal off Anthony Caruso's assist to end the day's scoring.
The Red and Blue will meet Lafayette at noon on Sunday, Sept. 14 in the final match of the tournament. Lafayette was a 4-1 winner over Richmond in the early contest Friday evening. Richmond and Marshall will square off Saturday at 5:00 pm.
