May 18, 2008

Box Score

Duquesne's baseball team lost its regular season finale, 13-11 Saturday afternoon at Dayton. The Dukes were led by Bill Torre, who went 3-5 with five RBI and two runs scored.

The Dukes jumped to a 3-0 first inning lead, but the Flyers responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first. The game see-sawed back and forth for the next several innings before DU scored four runs in the seventh for an 11-7 advantage. However, UD answered again with five runs in the bottom of the seventh and one more in the eighth to capture the win.

Derek Mechling went 2-4 with two RBI, two stolen bases, a run scored and two walks while Eric Morrison went 1-1 with two RBI. The Dukes had 10 hits in the game, making it 12 of the last 14 games the Red and Blue have reached double-digits in hits.

The Dukes return to action on Wednesday, May 21 as they face St. Bonaventure in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship at Campbell's Field in Camden, N.J. The third-seeded Dukes swept a three-game series from the sixth-seeded Bonnies earlier in the season. The winner of the game will move on to meet second-seeded Charlotte in Thursday's quarterfinals.
