Dukes Top Dayton, 3-1 in A-10 Series Opener

Ryan Juran tossed eight innings and won his sixth game of the season as the Dukes topped Dayton, 3-1 Thursday afternoon in Ohio. The Dukes improve to 24-25-1 overall and 16-8 in Atlantic 10 play. The 16 A-10 wins is a new Duquesne record.

Juran, who allowed seven hits while walking just one, has now pitched a school record 85 1/3 innings this season. After Juran hit the lead-off batter in the bottom of the ninth, closer Danny Brown came in and picked up his school record ninth save, retiring the first three UD batters he faced, fanning two.

After four scoreless innings, the Dukes took a 1-0 lead in the fifth as Mark Tracy singled in Pat Kimutis. In the seventh inning, the Red and Blue scored twice to take a 3-0 advantage as Derek Mechling singled in Andrew Heck and Anthony Manley singled in Mechling. The Flyers scored their lone run in the bottom of the eighth.

For the game, Mechling and Eric Morrison each had two hits for the Dukes while Manley had two stolen bases.

The Dukes and Flyers will meet again Friday at 1:00 pm. The Red and Blue, who have already clinched a berth in the Atlantic 10 Championship, are vying for a first-round bye, granted to the top two finishers in the regular season standings.
