Aaron Janusey's two-run, ninth inning home run helped catapault Duquesne's baseball team to a 16-14 victory Saturday afternoon at first place Charlotte. Janusey went 2-5 on the day with three RBI and three runs scored.
The Dukes jumped out to a 10-4 lead after two innings, but slowly saw there lead disappear as the 49ers narrowed the DU lead to 13-11 after seven frames. Three Charlotte runs in the bottom of the eighth gave the home team their first lead of the day at 14-13.
The Red and Blue responded however as Derek Mechling led off the top of the ninth with a double, one of five doubles by DU in the game. After a pitching chance, Anthony Manley sacrificed Mechling to third before Janusey launched the decisive long ball.
Mark Tracy was 2-5 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored while Mechling and Mike Carroll each scored three runs. Manley, Bill Torre, Dante Plassio and Andrew Heck each had two hits.
Grant Gillespie picked up the victory in relief, his third win of the season while Danny Brown picked up his team-leading fifth save, sitting down the final two batters of the game.
The Dukes and 49ers will play the series finale Sunday at noon.
