Duquesne Athletics Program Certified by NCAA

April 15, 2008

PITTSBURGH - The NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification announced today that Duquesne University is among 35 schools whose department of athletics has been recertified after undergoing the Association's second cycle of athletics certification.

Duquesne's certification process, which was chaired by Vice President of Management and Business Stephen Schillo, included a review of these primary components: governance and commitment to rules compliance, academic integrity, equity and student-athlete well-being. A designation of certified - as DU received - means that an institution operates its athletics program in substantial conformity with operating principles adopted by the Division I membership.

"The recertification is a testament to the dedication of our entire Athletics Department. Greg Amodio's team of coaches and staff demonstrate not only steadfast commitment to ensuring that our student athletes achieve success on and off the playing field, but also work to effectively maximize program resources," said Duquesne University President Charles Dougherty. "We congratulate the Athletics Department, as well as the campus recertification committee, in achieving this important recognition."

"I'm very pleased with the result of the certification process," said Director of Athletics Greg Amodio. "The evaluation required significant effort from a cross-section of the Duquesne community. The result of this comprehensive evaluation can only help us as we continue to look for ways to improve."

Athletics certification was designed to ensure integrity in the institution's athletics program and to assist institutions in improving their athletics departments. NCAA legislation mandating athletics certification was adopted in 1993. Duquesne, which offers 20 intercollegiate sports, was certified for the first time in 1997.

All 326 active Division I members participate in the certification process.
