After jumping out to a 3-0 first inning lead and a 5-0 advantage after six innings, the Duquesne baseball team held on for a 6-5 victory at Akron Tuesday afternoon, extending its winning streak to seven games.
The Dukes scored three times in the first inning as Eric Morrison tripled in the first two runs and Bill Torre doubled in the third.
In the fifth inning, Derek Mechling doubled and stole third before Aaron Janusey scored him on a sacrifice fly.
The sixth inning saw Pat Kimutis drive in Torre for the 5-0 lead.
After the Zips tied the score wth a run in the seventh and four in the eighth, the Dukes responded in the top of the ninth as Janusey's double drove in Mechling for the winning run.
Matt Passauer pitched the first four scoreless innings for the Red and Blue, allowing three hits while walking none and striking out three. Lawrence Anderson closed out the eighth inning to pick up his second win of the year while Danny Brown tossed a scoreless ninth to capture his first career save.
Duquesne's Wednesday game versus Niagara has been cancelled due to poor field conditions, so the Dukes return to the diamond on Friday, March 28 as they host St. Bonaventure in a three-game Atlantic 10 series.
