PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh's Diana Andreyko and Kelly Campbell combined for 30 kills as the Panthers won the volleyball version of The City Game 3-0 Tuesday night. Pittsburgh (2-5) out hit the Dukes .276 to .073. Dana McLaughlin led DU with 12 kills. Kristin Garnett had 25 assists and Katie Goss recorded nine digs as the Dukes fell to 5-2 on the season
The Panthers came roaring out of the gates taking a 6-0 lead to begin the game. Pittsburgh committed only one error while hitting .457 and was victorious in game one, 30-18.
After trailing 21-12 in the second game, DU had seven consecutive points behind the serving of Lindsay Hess to get the Dukes with two points at 21-19. The teams exchanged the next 10 points (26-24) when Nicole Wright's kill narrowed the deficit to one point at 26-25. That was as close as Duquesne could get as the Panthers took the second game 30-27.
The third game was similar to the first game as Pittsburgh dominating hitting .364 to .026. With the score tied at 6-6, the Panthers scored six of the next seven point to take a 12-7 lead. After a timeout, Duquesne got as close as four points (14-10) but could not stop the Panthers momentum as they took game three 30-16 and the match 3-0.
The Dukes will be in Flagstaff, Ariz. this weekend for the 2007 Fiesta Bowl Tournament. Duquesne will play High Point Friday night at 6:30 p.m. followed by a pair of game Saturday. DU will play Louisiana-Lafayette at noon and the host Northern Arizona at 9:00 p.m. The next home match will open the 2007 Atlantic 10 conference schedule Oct. 5 against Fordham.
