Three Dukes Named to A-10 Academic Team

Duquesne University junior Aaron Janusey (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and seniors Derek Mechling (Homer City, Pa./Homer Center) and Alex Sharick (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) have been named to the 10-man Atlantic 10 Baseball Academic All-Conference Team as announced by the conference office.

Janusey led the Dukes in batting average (.318), hits (61), RBI (51), home runs (7), doubles (17) and slugging (.526) and was second on the team in walks (28) and hit by pitch (8) and third in runs (35). Starting at first base in all 51 games, he boasted a team-best .359 average in Atlantic 10 play and had a .991 fielding percentage. The business major possesses a 3.52 cumulative grade point average.

Derek Mechling


Mechling is a political science major with a 3.63 gpa. He was also a 2006 A-10 Academic Team selection and was a 2006 CoSIDA Academic All District honoree. On the field, he batted.287 with five home runs, 24 RBI, 27 runs scored and eight stolen bases. He hit .300 in Atlantic 10 play and was named the A-10 Player of the Week on May 14 after going 7-10 with three home runs and seven RBI in a sweep of Temple.

Alex Sharick


Sharick was a versatile asset for the Dukes, helping the team at the plate and on the mound. He made 10 pitching starts for the Red and Blue, posting two wins while striking out 45 batters in 63 2/3 innings. Sharick also made 15 starts in the field, turning in a .259 average and a .400 on base percentage. He too was a 2006 CoSIDA Academic All-District choice. In the classroom, Sharick turned in a 3.83 grade point average in mathematics.
