Arlington, Va. - Duquesne's baseball team, which scored both runs in the first with just one hit, lost this weekend's 3-game series to George Washington, 6-2, in both teams' final game of the 2007 season, Saturday afternoon at Bancroft Field in Virginia.
Juniors Derek Mechling and Pat Kimutis drove in Duquesne's runs. Sophomore Ryan Juran kept GW off the scoreboard while fanning four in the final four innings. Senior Alex Sharick (2-7), who pitched over 65 innings for the Dukes, picked up the loss.
In the top of the first, Mechling's single drove in freshman Chris Happ. Kimutis's bases-loaded walk scored Mechling.
GW put up four in the third for a 4-2 lead and then added single runs in the fourth and fifth.
Gavin Swanson, who slashed his ninth home run of the season, went 2-for-3 for the hosts. Starter Ryan Lapointe (5-3) picked up the victory; he allowed two of DU's three hits while striking out five in six innings.
The Dukes finish 2007 with a 22-29 record, 10-17 in Atlantic 10 Conference play and ninth place in the league standings. The Colonials' 14-13 league mark is good for seventh place, just missing next week's A-10 Championship Tournament. GW was 23-30 overall with one tie, a 10-inning contest with Delaware State that didn't beat nighttime.
The six teams in the league tourney are, in alphabetical order, Charlotte, Fordham, Rhode Island, Richmond, St. Bonaventure and Xavier. The games will be held at Fifth Third Field, the home of the Class A Dayton Dragons.
