Pittsburgh, Pa. - Duquesne Field was a hitter's paradise and a pitcher's nightmare on Saturday as the Dukes held off Temple, 21-17, for their fourth win in row and seventh victory in the last 10 contests.
Derek Mechling went 3-for-4 with six RBI on a two-run homer, and a grand-slam capping Duquesne's 10-run sixth that put the Dukes on top for good, 17-10.
Eric Morrison and Brian Bernardo each were 4-for-6; Morrison drove in five, Bernardo three runs. Michael Dukovich (2-1), who was charged with three unearned runs in three innings of relief, picked up the win.
The Dukes were down, 10-7, heading into the sixth. That 10-run rally gave DU a seven-run lead, their first of the day. Each team added four in the eighth to raise the score to 21-14. Temple scored three unearned runs in the ninth for the final margin.
The win increased Duquesne's record to 21-25, 9-14 in Atlantic 10 competition. DU and the Owls pounded out 19 hits apiece. Duquesne secured the victory despite five errors that resulted in eight unearned runs. Temple's (17-33, 8-15 A-10) one miscue did not affect the scoring.
Ryan Weber was 4-for-6 with three RBI and Sean Barksdale's 3-for-5 generated five runs for the Owls. Dan Brady hit a home run. Kyle Monahan (2-4) picked up the loss.
