No. 1 Richmond Drops Duquesne, 6-2

Pittsburgh, Pa. - Duquesne University's baseball team was defeated by the Richmond Spiders, 6-2, Sunday afternoon at Duquesne Field in Green Tree, Pa. The win keeps UR in a tie with Charlotte for first place in the Atlantic 10 with identical 13-2 conference records. Duquesne, which has now lost six straight, is 13-21 on the season, 4-11 in league play.

Senior Joe Berletic and junior Nolan Pena had multi-hit games. Berletic went 2-for-2 with a double and scored DU's final run in the ninth after entering the game as a pinch hitter in the seventh. Pena was 2-for-3.

Senior Michael Dukovich (1-1), who was touched for three runs (one earned) while striking out four in five innings, was charged with the loss. Senior Travis Rife, junior Keith Meyer and freshman Johnny Elms held the streaking Spiders off the scoreboard in the final three innings. Duquesne, which scored once in the third, again had a ninth inning rally. This one produced just one score.

Richmond scored an efficient six runs on three hits. Andrew Justice drove in two. Starter Josh Horn (4-2) picked up the win.

The Dukes, who saw two non-conference games rained out last week, will try it again. On Tuesday, April 24, 2007, the Red and Blue travel to Penn State (16-19) for a 5:05 p.m. game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, and then return to the 'Burgh for a Wednesday, April 25 match with Kent State (17-22) at 3:00 p.m. on Duquesne Field.
