Cincinnati, Ohio - Duquesne's baseball team dropped a weather-related doubleheader, 8-6 and 5-1, to Xavier Friday afternoon on the Musketeers' Hayden Field.
Xavier (14-20, 9-2 Atlantic 10) remained unbeaten at Hayden, winning all eight contests this season. Duquesne is 13-17, 4-7 in league play.
Originally scheduled for three single games this weekend, Xavier moved the start of game one from 4:00 to 1:00 p.m. and then, since the weather was still cooperating, started game two about 20 minutes later.
Junior Aaron Janusey (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) was 3-for-4 with two doubles, home run, a walk and 2 RBI in the first game. In the nightcap, sophomore Mike Carroll (New Martinsville, WV/Magnolia) went 2-for-4, hitting his team-leading fifth home run.
In game one, Duquesne scored four runs in the top of the first only to see XU answer with five in the second and three more in the third for a 8-4 lead. The Dukes added single runs in the seventh and ninth, Janusey's homer, for the final tally of 8-6.
In the nightcap, Xavier broke a scoreless tie with one run in the fourth, three in the sixth and one more in the seventh for a 5-0 lead. Carroll's one-out home run in the ninth accounted for the Red and Blue's only score.
Jeff Naughton (4-3), who gave up eight runs in five innings in game one, was charged with the loss. Relievers Michael Dukovich and Matt Melillo pitched three scoreless innings. Gary Pierpoint (2-3) picked up the defeat in the nightcap, surrendering three earned runs in 5.1 innings.
Three Musketeers each had a pair of hits in game one, led by Drew Schmidt who also drove in two. Starter Bill Konecny (2-3), who gave up four runs while walking six, picked up the win.
Jordan Wolf led the offensive attack for XU in the second game. He was 3-for-4 including a double. Michael Lucas (2-5) pitched a complete game with one earned run and seven stikeouts.
The Musketeers and Dukes will take the field for the final game in the series tomorrow afternoon (April 14) at 1:00 pm at Hayden Field. If weather permits, this will be the final game of the series. If not, the final game of the series is scheduled for Sunday afternoon starting at noon.
The forecast for Saturday is breezy with periods of rain, some heavy in the morning and afternoon. Windy with a little rain, then snow overnight. As for Sunday, it's clouds and windy with snow and rain in the morning and a little rain in the afternoon. Temperature is predicted to get into the 50s both days.
Neither team has a game scheduled Monday; both play non-conference home games on Tuesday.
