Clearwater, Fla. - The Duquesne baseball team rebounded with two runs in the bottom of the ninth for the Red & Blue's second straight win, a 9-8 victory over Lehigh Monday afternoon at the Clearwater Collegiate Invitational.
Sophomore Brian Bernardo's one-out single drove in junior Pat Kimutis with the game-winning run. Senior Joe Kaye pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the win.
Bernardo went 2-for-5 with two RBI, and Kimutis was 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Aaron Janusey was 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Bill Torre (2/4) had his third consecutive multi-hit game. Joe Berletic slashed a triple, driving in a pair of Dukes. Derek Mechling, Janusey and Kimutis each scored twice.
Gary Pierpont started and pitched five innings, giving up two earned runs while striking out five.
Duquesne scored twice in the first and added a run in the second for a 3-0 lead. The Mountain Hawks (0-3-1) scored one in the third and three in the fifth to go ahead, 4-3. DU regained the edge, 5-4, with two in the bottom of the sixth.
Lehigh answered with four in the top of seventh for their largest margin, 8-5. Duquesne plated two in the bottom of that frame to get within one, 8-7.
Reliever Geoff Campbell was charged with the loss. Dan Clauson and Liam O'Connor both went 3-for-4 for the Patriot League squad. Both teams committed a pair of errors that resulted in two unearned runs, including one of the Dukes' ninth inning scores.
Duquesne (2-3) next takes on Central Michigan (4-5) at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7.
