Dukes Take First Game, 6-2, Over La Salle

March 24, 2007

Box Score

Philadelphia, Pa. - Sophomore Mike Carroll's (New Martinsville, WV / Magnolia) leadoff home run in the second and senior Jeff Naughton's (Rochester, NY / Churchville Chili) five scoreless innings got the Dukes going on the way to a 6-2 win over La Salle in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Hank DeVincent Field.

Caroll and junior Aaron Janusey (Venetia, PA / Peters Township) led the Dukes' offense that scored six runs off 10 hits. The soph went 3-for-5 with one RBI and a pair of runs. Janusey was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

Senior Travis Rife (York, PA / Dallastown) was called in to take over for Naughton in the sixth, surrendering just a single unearned run in the final four innings to preserve the victory over the Explorers, an in-state Atlantic 10 Conference foe.

Naughton raised his record to 3-2; La Salle starter Dan Waters is now 2-3.

Duquesne extended the lead to 4-0 with three in the sixth. La Salle answered with two in the bottom of that frame, their only runs of the game. The Dukes added single runs in the eighth and ninth.

Duquesne is now 7-8, 1-0 (A-10). La Salle is 0-1 in league play, 7-9 overall.

The three-game series opener, originally scheduled for Friday afternoon, became part of a doubleheader after pre-April showers prohibited any action yesterday. Game two gets underway later this afternoon.
