Kent, Ohio - Senior Alex Sharick (Lower Burrell, PA / Burrell) pitched a three-hit complete game shutout as the Dukes knocked off Kent State, 4-0, Tuesday afternoon in the Golden Flashes' 2007 home opener at Schoonover Stadium. Junior Eric Morrison (Pittsburgh, PA / Bethel Park) went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base to lead the offensive attack.
Duquesne took a 1-0 lead on Aaron Janusey's sacrifice fly in the first and doubled the margin in the third on Derek Mechling's one-out single. The Red & Blue picked up two unearned runs in the fourth. Sharick (1-2) continued his mastery of the KSU batters, allowing just two hits the rest of the way. The 6-foot-2 right hander struck out six and walked none for his first win of the season.
Three Kent State pitchers kept the Dukes from crossing the plate in the final five innings. Starter Steven Davis (0-2) picked up the loss for the 5-12 Mid-American Conference team.
Duquesne (6-8) next faces La Salle (6-8) in their Atlantic 10 Conference opener this weekend with three single games starting on Friday, March 23, 2007, at 2:30 p.m. on Hank DeVincent Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
