PITTSBURGH - Pitt's Shavonte Zellous scored a game-high 23 points and Marcedes Walker added 19 as the Panthers halted Duquesne's two-game winning streak with their 72-54 victory Saturday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center.
The Dukes were led by Kristi Little's 17 points.
Pitt dominated the entire first half, outscoring Duquesne 38-16. The Dukes made only five of 22 attempts from the field and were outscored 16-4 in the paint. An early 10-8 Pitt lead grew to 23-9 with 7:39 remaining in the first half. Zellous continued to take control of the half, as her jumper at the buzzer gave the Panthers a 22 point lead going into halftime, 38-16.
The Pitt lead got as high as 34 points, 64-30 at the 9:28 mark of the second half. Duquesne continued to play hard and finished the game on a 24-8 run, 14 of those points were from Little.
"To say we struggled in the first half is an understatement," said head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio. "But we outscored them in the second half 38-34, and we will find positive in that."
Pitt outrebounded Duquesne 50-31 and had 18 second chance points to the Dukes' 4. Overall, the Panthers had 20 more points in the paint, 38-18 over the Dukes.
Duquesne will return to the Palumbo Center Dec. 28 at 4:00 p.m. against Eastern Michigan.
