Dayton Upends Dukes in 2 OT, 2-1

Oct. 12, 2007

Box Score

PITTSBURGH - Mandi Back's goal with just 2:19 left in the second overtime gave the visiting Dayton Flyers a 2-1 victory Friday night at Rooney Field, ending the Dukes' winning streak at three games.

The Flyers came close to taking the lead in the 12th minute when Dayton's Kristen Persichini header was stopped by Duquesne keeper Brittany Findley right on the goal line. Although there were a total of 19 (UD 10, DU 9) the match went into halftime scoreless.

Audra Mathews was inches from notching her 21st career goal and becoming DU's all-time career goal leader when her shot in the 54th minute hit off the cross bar. Back almost ended the contest in regulation when her shot hit the right post in the 88th minute. As the clocked ticked down, Mathews had a chance for the game-winner but was stopped by UD keeper Niki Reed with three seconds remaining in the second half. The game would go into overtime tied 1-1.

The teams were still deadlocked 1-1 as the Dukes held the Flyers to only one shot at in the first overtime.

The second overtime was played very close. Dayton first scoring chance was foiled when Kelly Reed blocked a Cara Cornacchia shot at 106:39, but 62 seconds later Alli Foust set up Back on the left side as she pushed the ball past Findley for the game-winning goal.

The Dukes look to get a weekend split as they host Xavier Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Stats will be available later in the evening.
