Washington, D.C. - The Duquesne women's soccer team was edged by Georgetown 2-1 in overtime today at North Kehoe Field in the final game of the 2006 D.C. Invitational.
The Hoyas tallied the game-winner at the 4:34 mark of the first overtime session. Georgetown junior Sarah Fetters sent a cross from near the end line towards the goal. The ball ricocheted off a Duquesne defender and into the goal for the Hoya win.
All three of the game's goals came after halftime as the pace of play picked up considerably in the second half. Georgetown took a 1-0 lead at the 64:17 mark when Chrissy Skogen broke free from the Duquesne back line and took a feed from Shante Cofield.
Duquesne tied the game at 1-1 with just 1:50 left to go in regulation. Junior Audra Mathews (Cincinnati, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) blasted a shot from the top of the box. The ball hit off the Georgetown keeper's hands and ended up at the feet of sophomore Jenna Farneti (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) who scored the equalizer.
The Hoyas outshot Duquesne, 12-8 for the game as the teams combined for 14 shots in the second half.
Duquesne goalie Ginny Bondi (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) stopped six Georgetown shots.
Farneti was named to the All-Tournament team after scoring both of the Dukes' goals this weekend.
The Dukes open their home slate next Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1:00 pm hosting Wright State in a non-conference bout.
