Steve Maiolo, Men's Student-Athlete of the Year

Steve Maiolo (baseball) and Diana Wuebker (volleyball) were named the 2005-06 Duquesne University Student-Athletes of the Year as determined by a vote of a panel of University administrators. The honorees were recognized at a reception on April 26.

Maiolo is a two-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference choice being named to the second team in 2004 and the first team in 2005, leading the Dukes to the Atlantic 10 Championship both seasons. He has started all 38 games for the Dukes this season and has started a school record 142 straight games. He is fourth all-time at DU in career starts with 168 and is also fourth in career hits with 201. This year he is batting .287 with 41 hits and 25 runs scored. For his career, he is batting .324 with 110 runs scored and 101 RBI.

Academically, Maiolo was named an ESPN the Magazine Third Team Academic All-American last year and was an Academic All-District choice in 2004 and 2005. In addition, he was the 2005 Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year as well as being named an Academic All-Conference honoree as a sophomore and junior. He boasts a 3.94 grade point average as a secondary education / citizenship major and has been on the Dean's List, Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and Duquesne's Director of Athletics Honor Roll every semester. Maiolo is also a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society and the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Society.

Wuebker earned her fourth All-Atlantic 10 honor this past season after leading the Dukes to a 15-13 overall record. She also snagged All-Conference laurels as a junior and senior and was tabbed an All-Rookie pick in 2002. The 6-1 middle hitter averaged 3.14 kills, 2.94 digs and 1.01 blocks per game ranking her second among the Dukes. She averaged 2.64 kills, 3.80 digs and 1.14 blocks in Conference games. She has the distinction of being one of just five Duquesne volleyball players to record 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. Wuebker ends her career as the Dukes' all-time leader in block assists (328) and total blocks (415).

Wuebker earned her second All-Academic accolade this past year posting a 3.59 cumulative grade point average in elementary education. Wuebker was tabbed a 2005 ESPN the Magazine District 2 first team Academic All-America pick as well. She is also a member of Pi Lambda Theta, Omicron Delta Kappa, Golden Key International and Mortar Board Honor Societies.

She holds an active role in community service participating in Duquesne's Student Athlete Advisory Committee as well as the Council for Exceptional Children and Best Buddies. Wuebker is a member of the Duquesne Women's Leadership Society and serves as a tutor for elementary children. She is active in the Pittsburgh volleyball community serving as head coach of the Pittsburgh Elite Volleyball Club 13 Gold.
